    SMARTDRV Causes Bad Game Installs

I'm using a modified Win98 boot disk for booting and playing some old DOS games.

I noticed that seem a bit slow installing so decided that the use of SMARTDRV might be in order.

Whilst it sped things up dramatically, none of the installs see to work correctly ie files are corrupted.

I know I can install ok without SMARTDRV loaded, but was more curious to know why it causes the corruptions.

Windows Millenium is the installed OS so maybe the version of SMARTDRV is not to compatible with the Win98 boot disk ?

Try using the /X switch to disable write-behind caching on all drives. Write behind caching is supposed to make SMARTDRV wait until the system is idle before writing info to the disk. It could be waiting too long, and even flushing the cache without ever having written anything....

Try using SMARTDRV only on the letter for the installation media, such as the CDROM or the floppies, the hard drive itself should be fast enough to keep up with the data stream from the CD or floppy....
