formatting hard drive

    formatting hard drive

    when i try to format my hard drive i get a response that there is not enough memory to install sys. files how do i get past this problem........thanx
    WINDOWS XP SP2
    CPU Type intel pentium 4, 2800 MHz
    Motherboard Dell Dimension 8300
    Chipset Intel Canterwood i875P/E7210
    Memory 512 MB (DDR SDRAM)
    BIOS Phoenix (02/23/04)
    ALL-IN-WONDER 9000 (64 MB)
    3D Accelerator ATI Radeon 9000 (RV250)
    Creative EMU10K2 Audigy / Audigy 2 Audio Processor
    ---------
    LAPTOP WINDOWS XP Home SP2
    Mobile Intel Celeron cpu 1.50 GHZ
    System Memory 512 MB (RAM)

    what version of DOS?
    What kind of computer?
    how are you trying to do that?
    whats the exact message?
    Have you checked for viruses?
    Need more info

    well it is version 7.10 A
    i have a gateway select 475
    andi am going into dos and typing from c:/prompt...format c: /s

    then the message insufficient memory to load sys.format terminated.....

    i gave also tried with the boot disk applying same method...no matter how i try i get the same thing....thanx

    Solution:
    type in Dos Mode format (drive): /q
    then format (drive): /q /s
    the /q = quick format
    the /s = copy system files making a boot disk
    (drive): = drive you want to format

    reason: the drive must have 13% free space to clear the static data from the drive

    Just a little correction Spotter:

    Type the following commands:

    format c: /q
    sys c:
