How Do I Rename my Shared Drives, Why won't XP let me?

    Hi again all,

If i right-click on a for example the D Drive called "DATA" in explorer and select "Sharing & Security" the tick the box to share this drive it give it a default name of "DATA (D)"...

How do/can i change the Default shared name like u can with 98/2K etc?

the problem with the default shared names is that thay are listed in alfabetical order....

what i usually do to get around this is put the drive letter as the first part of the shared name so it gets the order right... however it seems XP won't allow this...

if i cant sort this out then i'll have to rename the drives themselves to like "D DATA" etc, but then that would still leave my network s'cuts on my other PC pointing to the wrong place, and some network s'cuts like the favorites cant be moved with TweakUI on 98 unless the original is still available...

    Thanx in Advance... Regards

If i can't rename the shared drives on XP then this is another way around it...

How Can I move the favorites on my other Win98 PC without TweakUI?, i need to point them to the new shared name that XP gave it. is there a reg hack for this?

I do have TweakUI but Problem is b'cuz the last used favorites folder isn't available (b'cuz the shared name has changed...) it wont let me change/see it.

if you want to share, try to make the XP to look like 2k. then you would have the same look as 2k, i had the same problem. after changing the look of XP, i now have the look of 2k, which the share option lets you change the name.

thx for the prompt gotek ...i then realised that if i unshare the drive then reshare it, it will let me name the drive for the first time only... no need to change look to Windows Classic.

When i first shared them i just enabled it and didn't care what they were called, i thought they would remane like in 98 a bit later on.

Problem solved! it seems the solution was right under my nose all the time nice and easy anyway.

    Thanx & Regards
