Poor network performance after removing Novell Server from NT domain

I was using two servers in one NT 4.0 domain, a PDC, and one Novell Netware 4.12 Server. All clients had access to the novell server by using the novell gateway service on the PDC, and using the netware protocols and client services on the clients. After disconnecting the novell server from the network (and also disabling/removing the gateway/client netway services and protocols) the speed of the network became VERY slow, and I couldn't find any particular mistake/fault to cause this speed hit. The lights on the Hub shows 100Mbit speed, but even saving MSWord files on the server (~50K) takes 10 to 15 times longer than before removing the novell server.

Any suggestions ? Please help !

Lets try to isolate the problem, it can only be 2 things - the PDC server or the network itself.

To check whether it is the N/W try copying a file from one PC to another (without using the server) and then try copying the same file from the PC to the server.

If the times are the same then the N/W is most likely the problem (but not necessarily the cause). If the copy to the server is longer then the server is the problem.

To ensure stability of results please make sure that none else is using the N/W or the Server and PCs. Also copy a large file (~300Mb) to ensure that the time difference is obvious.

If it is the N/W can you please post here the list of protocols being used, but I would remove them all but one from each system and see what happens.

If it is the Server, run the performance monitor to see what is happening.

All the best and please let us know.

Did you try uninstalling the NWLink protocol and netware client ? If you had novell and nt clients before and installed the novell client on workstations, by default network access and primary logon stays with Novell. Removing the NW client may help.

We didn't use any Novell Client software, just all the stuff that came with NT server and workstation (Novell Gateway service on the server, Novell Client service on workstations, IPX/SPX protocol). I removed all novell related services and protocols on _one_ workstation without any change in speed behaviour. On the weekend I can check the whole network without disturbing other people working, so maybe I can tell you anything next week...

    thanks
