    trouble installing Visioneer scanner

    Hi all
a couple of months ago I replaced my hard drive and thought I had reinstalled everything correctly such as my Visioneer 7600 usb scanner. I found out a few days ago the scanner does not work. I am running win98se and it worked fine with my previous hard drive and windows installation. I have followed the instrustions for removal and reinstalling but nothing has worked. WHen I try to use it the first time I get a "problem loading scanner driver" error message. Under system (both windows and DOS) there is only one scanner and it says the driver is there and working properly. I try rebooting and have gotten a spool32 error in the spool.exe and two scanners show up in the task bar. Also during the boot process after the updating configuration files line I see this
"sshould progress after a delete.should progres after a delete". I have never seen this before. Any ideas..i am stumped like a redwood.
    thanks
    brent

When you installed the drivers, was the scanner disconnected from the USB port? It should be.

When it's time to hook-up the scanner after the driver install, was your printer connected to the scanner? It shouldn't be.

ChuckG--I just installed the latest driver for my Visoneer 7600 but did not think to unhook the USB cable while doing so. The scanner seems to work OK. Do you think everything is OK--that the new driver installed? I did not record the name of the old drivers so do not know if it really updated. Now (Per msinfo32) they seem to be
    vipersti.cpl 11/5/1998 7:48 AM Size: 28672
    vipersti.dll 10/12/1998 0:23 AM Size: 40960

Welshjim- I just installed a Visioneer 8900, and it states in the directions NOT to connect the scanner until after the drivers are installed. Scanner drivers can be tricky to install and you really have to install them just as the manual says.

In your case, if everything works, I wouldn't worry about it. You did an upgrade and not a complete install.

    chuck,
i uninstalled the paper software and the drivers then before restarting the computer I unplugged the USB cable from the machine and unplugged the power supply for the scanner. On restart I deleted the paperport file from under the twain_32 and the maxlink.ini as they recommend on teh visioneer website. then reinstalled. Looking just now I see this
twain_32 with paprport inder it and a
twain32 with paprport under it as well.
Which one should be there or should both?
first time I went to delete the paprport under twain_32 paprport was't under twain32, just twain_32...

coops- What I would do is get into safe mode, then go into your Device Manager, and delete your scanner drivers under Imaging Devices. Make sure your scanner is not connected to your machine, then reboot. Then start all over again with the complete install.

I know that these drivers are a pain, but just take your time and do it right, and everything will work out for you.

As far as your question goes, I don't know. The scanner is not on my machine.

Also, do you have a digital camera installed on this machine? If you do, you need to select the right twain drivers in your scanning program. Look around your program and you'll see it.

thanks for the ideas Chuck. removed in safe mode, deleted associated file, deleted both twain foldes (twain_32 and twain32), deleted visioneer entry in registry - anything i could find. Unplugged usb and power cables. restarted, reinstalled drivers and this went fine, told me to connect which i did, said found new hardware and locating software but was looking for 7600usb abd 5300 usb and told me could not create surge reg key of some sort. this error came up a few times then it finally installed but did not work. tried again deleting and removing programs and files associated restarted and it not problems except under system it said imaging device was 7600 but there were about 7 entires for 5300 under unknown devices.
i try again and after connecting went looking for drivers but wouln't find them on the disk??? it is driving me crazy(ier)
i am going to try installing it to a laptop and see what happens......

well Igave it a few days and retried some things. as per web instructions from the company, uninstalled from add/remove programs. deleted maxlink.ini, deleted paprport folder from twain_32 then shut down. unplugged cables, rebooted and started installing paperport software. came to connecting scanner, plugged it in and then it went to find software and I got a SURegCreateKey failed..this I found out was due to Norton cleansweep. redid everything I had just done, disabled cleansoft and AV software and reinstalled. No error this time
and when it was all done smae thing happened- error saying there is a problem loading the scanner driver - try again - ty closing some applications of which there are none running. When I restarted it came up with two scanners on the taskbar but only one in systems. Could it be a leftover registry problem? I reinstalled a new C drive but didn't fdisk /mrb before installing WIN98SE.
Anyone have ANY kind of idea?

Gee, what a royal pain. I can think of a couple of other things you may want to try.

Because you are not having any success with the install, this tells me that something is running in the background that is screwing you up. It's probably some Norton thing. You can go into msconfig and uncheck everything, reboot, then do a ctrl-alt-delete to make sure you've got nothing running...but of course leave explorer running. Then try the install. Or, and I don't know if this will work, but you could try installing the drivers in safe mode.

Coops- I'm running out of ideas. Let's get this done.

Edit: Uncheck everything under your startup tab in msconfig. Click apply, then reboot. I would definitely delete everything and start over.
