Weird connection problem
Ok guys and gals. This is a new one for me. I got my new machine up and running now including the network. Everythings terrific hardware wise. But (you knew there had to be a but....)
My dial up to my ISP works correctly and connects at my usual 49,333 however no apps can see it. When I first boot up, just before Win98 completes loading, I get a popup error window headed:
________________________
POPROXY
Norton anti-virus is unable to start eMail
protection. Please ensure that TCP/IP is
installed and port 110 is available.
_________________________
Once windoze completes I have full network function, TCP/IP is installed, I have no errors in the system list and Si-soft Sandra shows nothing irregular in the network or ports, etc.
Once I dial up and connect to my ISP and launch any app (IE, Netscape, FTP, Norton Update) there is no connection whatsoever.
I have no IRQ conflicts and no brain left after 5 hours of checking and re-checking.
I know it's going to be something really simple but I'm afraid I've run my course and created a dull mind here. What do you all think?
Thanks, the Griffin
PS: Everything worked fine until the network was up and running. The same network I had with my previous machine.

Hey griffinspc, did you make sure your TCP/IP properties reflected the proper IP address/subnet/DNS? Try pinging from a DOS prompt when you dial up and connect. From C:\ping 204.71.202.160 and see if you get replies. No? Un/reinstall TCP/IP.
If you do then
C:\ping www.yahoo.com replies? OK you are connected and should be able to browse. NO? check your DNS. If DNS is OK and you still can't browse it maybe a winsock issue.

Hi Griffin,
I have just encountered the exact same problem on a friend's computer last night. His machine dials up and connects ok, but no programs running detect a connection.
We tried re-installing his modem, changing IP settings, tested the line, etc, and came up with nothing so far.
If you find out the problem, post back. If I can find out, I will do the same.

I can't beleive it, I haven't signed onto this site in several months (thanks to all the good information I received when I first found this forum) and on the very first page is my very same problem.
A windstorm knocked out our phone, and therefore DSL, line. It was finally repaired last night, but now I can't communicate. I was also getting page fault errors anytime I launched an app that needed an internet connection. The modem is fine, the line is fine, and my ISP can communicate with my puter. They also verified their server, routers, etc are set okay and functioning. But try to sign onto anything, and it just sits there (or, in the case of IE, I get a "page cannot be found" error). I was on the phone with the ISP for two hours. It is clearly not the DSL line becuase I cannot connect by dial-up either. It is not an IE problem like the ISP said because even programs that don't connect via IE won't communicate. Either by myself before I called, or with the help of the ISP, I have done all of the following: Uninstalled and reinstalled TI ADSL, uninstalled and reinstalled the DSL software, uninstalled and reinstalled all the adapters and all the protocols, reset the internet connection settings, verified the DNS and IP properties, did the ping from dos to an IP number and to yahoo (couldn't find yahoo). After everything failed to resolve the problem, the ISP decided it must be a windows problem and elevated it to tier two, who hasn’t called me back yet. However, I also reinstalled windows just in case that was it. It wasn’t, but it did eliminate the page fault errors. I wish I could search the archives for this, but as I have no internet at home, not even dial-up, and we are prohibited from logging onto the internet at work for non-business purposes, I don’t have time. For the same reason I cannot do a search for “winsock” and see if that may be my problem. Can someone help griffin, sanford, dragon and me?

This is weird, maybe it's a curse but jr_sanford,I already tried pinging to www.google.com and a couple of others, no luck. I haven't tried C:\ping 204.71.202.160 so I will tonight, whoops, Saturday. I have to leave town for a couple of days.
I have this nagging feeling that's it's DNS related but.....
I will definitely post back with my outcome when I can, thanks for the replies.

If you are networked, then check tcp/ip and uncheck Microsoft Family logon, that is if you have checked client for Microsoft Networks.
I know if both are checked it will stop you cold. Did me anyway.

Jr Sanford, thanks, you started me on the right path. It was a winsock problem, and it is fixed now. Thanks!

This problem took so long to resolve that a new thread was created (part 2) and I answered the final this morning there. I just saw this had resurfaced so I'll copy my last answer here too for anyone still with the problem.
"Ok folks. It's fixed. It took forever and I really wish I could give all of you who offered help a definitive answer but here's the best I can do. At the suggestion of Ottomatic I downloaded and ran UOTrace http://www.blackcastlesoft.com/uotrace/download.asp (Neat little freeware). This allowed me to see that although connected and getting a normal speed and length report from Dial up Adapter I was not getting a real connection to my ISP, Worldnet or even internally.
I couldn't see anything but the host, not my other machine, even though I could share files, weird. Checking further I found I was receiving but not sending to the outside world. This I confirmed by tracking incoming Zone Alarm messages and the initial bytes sent/received.
I began by moving the NIC and modem and Video cards (again)(re-installing) with no effect. I then removed them completely, uninstalled all network references and booted clean a couple of times and then replaced and added all the latest drivers for all cards from MS and the manufacturers with no luck. I then replaced the modem with an external Zoom, no luck, then the NIC (a brand new Asound) with an older Intel 10/100 and reset all network references and re-installed all AT&T settings from AT&T using On-line FixIT which downloads and installs all stored settings from AT&T.
That did it. (I should say I completely removed Norton Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm and as yet they are still out. I'll re-install tonight but I don't think it was them. If anything goes haywire I'll post back.)
I'm using the same settings throughout, TCP/IP. etc.
I think it's 95% probable that it was the Asound NIC drivers more than anything else though the possibility that 2 problems actually contributed can't be ruled out.
Thanks again to all who answered and offered moral support. It's really frustrating to have something that should be so simple keeping you from using your machine for so long. Thankfully I had another machine to keep on the message boards during the struggle. Last as with anything like this I learned a lot more about my machine and therefore others. I could install a simple network now with my eyes closed and low on caffeine.
