Disabling fonts in windows ?
Hi there we have got a computer that has come in for repair and a problem with booting.
i noticed that is was taking about 15 MINUTES to boot so i thought that was wierd so i reinstalled windows again
Again same problem but i noticed that the little blue status bar was moving VERY SLOWLY so i thought ok i will log the boot and see what is causing the problem.
so looking though the bootlog and i noticed about 150-200 lines saying
Load start = c:\windows\fonts\???.ttf
Load fail = c:\windows\fonts\???.ttf failure code is 0016
??? is just an example of a file name
please help mike

Mike3D - How many TrueType Fonts (.ttf)does this computer have on it? 150 - 200 doesn't sound like too many. You can check out what they have to say at MS http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q127/9/70.ASP
scroll down to Font Failure about 2/3 of the way down.
Also I don't know if you have TweakUI or something similar, but there's an option to repair fonts in the case they are corrupted.
A good test would be to open MS Word or any other program that allows you to select a font. Look in the dropdown menu and see if you have a large selection of fonts. If you only have a couple, or if some of them look weird, you probably need to repair the fonts.

I have 179 true type fonts and 20 system fonts in my Windows\Fonts folder. Whatever the error I can't see this being the cause of the 15 minute boot. Probably something deeper.

I was also thinking that.
So what do you think the problem could be?
i tell you the problem.
at first the computer had come in for repair because a women had just bought it back from the usa and it had be damaged (dropped or something)in transit and the hard disk was dying, So i decided to GHOST an image of her hdd before i went any further. it took about an hour because of the damaged areas of her hard disk. the women then asked if she could have a replacement hard disk fitted so i did this and put her image on the new disk.
now the computer takes about 15 mins to boot and i dont know why. it was also doing this before it came in.
i have reinstalled windows twice.
and i have clean installed windows on another hard disk with drivers etc.. installed so this seems to me to be software related and not hardware.
interested in what you guys think
thanx Mike

Hi Mike,
The number of fonts must be irrelevant as I sometimes have as many as 550 on my system. (I use them for design work). I don't always have all of the fonts loaded but even when they are it doesn't cause a problem.
Must be a problem with whatever loads the fonts or the font files may be damaged/corrupted.

Mike - I'm no tech but it seems to me that if you "Ghosted" from a damaged hard drive you might want to do some sort of scandisk and defrag. If it copied over damaged data or something from the other HD of that sort that could cause problems. I'm sure one of the real techs will come along soon.
Also, are there any errors or conflicts in device manager. It's possible that whatever shock damaged the HD also loosened another internal connection of some sort.
That's all I can think of right now. Scandisk and Defrag for starters.
Cheers. Must be almost pub time in Essex

AHA found it
well i uninstalled norton system works 2001 and mcafee virus scan in safe mode and it boots up quicker
but that dont explain why i get load failed on the fonts ???? anyway it dont matter LOL
i think it must have been a conflict with nav 2001(which gets bundled with system works) and mcafee virus scan .
thanx to everybody who replied
Mike have a nice day
