Ad-Aware v5.62 in Release
If you just gotta have the newest version...
It's available for download at LavaSoft USA.
And the mirrors of course.
The latest signature file is included, and should read: 087-22-09-01.

Thanks Renovator. Download sites all busy at the moment so will try later. The sig. file update is perhaps the most important.

Renovator--If we have Ad-Adware 5.6 installed, can we just use the new reflist file, or (as with going from AA5.5 to 5.6) must/should we delete and install 5.62 from scratch? Or is this finally the occasion to use RefUpdate10.exe?
The lavasoftusa.com site is never clear on this.

Jim,
Ad-aware can be installed over itself; the only thing I do before hand is to go into its folder and delete the old signature file.
Yes you can install the latest sig.file without updating ad-aware.exe itself but why you would want to do this I don't know; when you update ad-aware itself the sig.file is automatically updated.
It is also a good practice to regularly check the lavasoft site for the latest sig. files which can be updated without the .exe program itself being changed.

Thanks guys,
Downloaded and installed it over itself.
And incidentally, the old Sig file is overwritten by the new one, as expected. So there's nothing to remove manually.

WelshJim,
I do not know. I have reposted your question at the Ad-Aware forum. Since 5.62 smoothed out a few things, upgrading's not a bad idea.
Our recommendation is still going to be to uninstall through Add/Remove programs, and install the newer versions, without programs running in the background. Even with the uninstall, your configuration settings should be retained in the reg, and appear in the new install.

Renovator--Thanks. Looking forward to your further advice. Since Lavasoft created RefUpdate I have assumed there would be an occasion to use it. But maybe now is not it.

Well, I'm not totally up to speed on the update feature...personally, I came down on the side of manual updates.
I did see where Ahmad has recommended that it be updated to v1.1. Appearently, v1 had a troublesome glitch. As with any new app, it'll take some time to see how it all works out.
The thing to keep in mind, is that as spyware becomes more sophisticated, so does Urizen's coding to clean it up. So, treat Ad-Aware's install and maintenance as you would your AV package.

I just found out on another site that ie has a built in spyware called Alexa and deleted the registry key that controlled it.
http://www.suggestafix.com/cgi-bin/f...t=ST;f=14;t=12
I installed and run adaware so following all the links in reading I still am not sure why ad aware didn't catch this one, but thought I would post in case someone here needed it.

I think the short answer is... Ad-Aware didn't see Alexa, because it wasn't there.
I'll shop this around, but I just ran down those links...then played around in the reg.
While I have the "Related Links" option in IE...I've never used it. The registry entry that the original site mentioned is the key for that "Related Links" Item...and it looks like Alexa will serve them up...but I think that is as far as it goes. The associated CLSID's are all clean.
I guess if you used the feature, Alexa may install. I have no interest in trying.
One other thing, the info that is shown being used by Alexa in this case...is used and logged by the servers I'm familiar with...that's how you get pages on the web. I mean, the server needs to know where and what you are...or it can't send you any packets. Remember, you request them...then they are sent.
This needs to be checked out further, Alexa is certainly on the spyware lists... but I don't think the sky is falling.
