New to Win 11: why aren't my photos on the desktop, only icons for photos?

I've gone back and forth a number of times. I want the icons of Tiffs and JPegs to show as images, not icons. I can work this out by experiment but it's probably faster to ask you. I had it yesterday but forgot how I did it.

Try this. Open File Explorer. Open Folder Options (from the 3 dots). On the View tab, make sure to UNCHECK "Always show icons, never thumbnails". Click OK.

I always press Apply and then OK.
I never have much luck with things staying the way I want them to be by only pressing OK.
IDK, maybe that's just me?
