File copy slows down and esata port
I have two separate issues.
1st, when I copy a 10 gb file from one hard drive to another hard drive, it starts out with a transfer speed of about 450 mb. Half way through the copy, it gradually goes down to about 90 mb of transfer speed. How can I flush the i/o or cache where ever it is? I have already played around in device manager, by checking unchecking the "enabled cache" of the hard drive.
Both hard drives are encrypted. I am on Windows 7 64 bit.
2nd, I have two esata ports. When I transfer a 10 gb file, sometimes it stalls half way through the copy. All internal sata ports work fine, except these two esata ports. I tried switching out cables already and that seems to have helped a little but still stalling sometimes half way through.

It's probably due to I/O caching. What utility are you using to copy the file?

You can try using xcopy with the /j option and see if that helps:

You could also try using Teracopy:

The first article that you provided is exactly what I have been looking for. It gave the explanation about I/O. In addition, it recommeds these two downloads: ESEUTIL.EXE + ESE.DLL
I am trying to find them from Microsoft site but I can't seem to locate them.
The second link is about XCopy which I am aware of the /J switch. However, prior to this, I did not understand the reason for the caching until the first article compared CopyFile vs CopyFileEx.
I have used TeraCopy and a handful of other copy software in the past.
Thanks MidKnyte!

I just tested XCopy with /J for the last 2 hours. In some case, it takes longer. When it is faster, it is only about 10-15% faster but when it is slower, it is almost 50% slower.

How many 10GB+ files do you have? Did you try Teracopy?

I tried it only on one 10 gb file, over and over to get a median test.
I have not tried teracopy yet but will tomorrow.
