Resolved [RESOLVED] Network Name & Password

We have a number of PCs here at work. All running Windows 7. One is shared by three people for email, etc (I'll call it A). Another one (I'll call it B) use A's printer through the network. It's not a network printer but attached to A.

Someone installed Windows 10 on A (GRRRRRRR). Okay, I thought, we'll use this one as the guinea pig. It seems to run fine (not many apps on it tbh). However, B can no longer print on A's printer. I checked the 10's sharing function and, indeed, it is sharing.

I went to B and deleted the printer. I then tried to to add A's printer to B. I can easily locate A on the network. When I try to see the printers attached to A, a window pops up asking me for the name & password of the network:

I enter the name of our workgroup but it never had a password associated with it and I can't get past the screen asking for a password.

    What am I missing?

    Thanks in advance,

    Terry

Do the 3 users of computer A each have separate login accounts (user name and password)? To share computer resources, you may need to set up a user account with a password on the computer that has the printer, if that has not already been done. Then, you can supply the asked for credentials when Microsoft asks for them. You could use PrinterUser and a password for the credentials.

It might be time to consider locking down these computers so unauthorized users do not "upgrade" them or install unwanted software or change settings. You might also want to think about imaging these computers so you can restore them to working condition if they get messed up. Windows 10 is still basically beta software - there are lots of things that do not work properly as yet.

Printer sharing instructions for Windows 8 are below. Not guaranteed to work for Windows 10 though.

    thanks, jdc.

i'll try disabling the password protection. if that doesn't work, i'll go ahead and reverse the 10 back to 7.

i already found a way to disable changing the background and found a program (iconid) to restore the icon layout on the desktop at every boot-up. i should look into disabling that "do you want to upgrade to windows 10" window too.

    thanks, again.

Another link to some software that can disable the Win 10 "upgrade" on Windows 7 or 8:

i thought about this printer problem on the way to work ...

the printer attached to A has network capabilities but because of problems with some of our word files and their insert-links (long story that i'll not get into), it had to be attached to a PC and not a stand alone network printer. we upgraded to office 2013 this past year and it never occurred to me to try and see if the word printing problems disappeared with the new version of word. so, this morning i made the printer attached to A a network printer. installed drivers on A & B. success!!!

i figured i'd try this rather than revert A to windows 7. i do eventually want to upgrade all the PCs here to 10 (since it's free for a year). i usually make my PC the guinea pig in anything this major, but i'm running 7 with virtual XP to run some critical but legacy basic systems. which means, i'll not be able to upgrade mine to 10 and check it out.

hopefully, 10 will behave on A. as i said, it is used for email and the web. the only other software on it is UPS's world ship system and that seems to be okay with 10.

again, thanks a bunch, jdc. and thanks for the links to disable the 10 nagging which i'll use on the other PC's until we're ready to take the plunge.

Thanks for the update. Running the printer as a network attached device is definitely the way to go if you have that capability.
