W98 & pcANYWHERE

Win 98 (not SE), pcANYWHERE 8.02 (installed both up_a and up_b, IBM PIII 1GHz, 128.

Just upgraded machine so I'm using the same modem, ext 56k, analog line, etc.

Previous configuration (W95 IBM P200) worked fine with my machine as host. Now whenever anyone dials in the instant the connection is made, Explorer goes to a Page Fault error condition. The remote user can see a blue screen and can even navigate the cursor but of course can't see anything to navigate to.

pcANYWHERE stays connected until closed by 3 finger salute.

I checked the MS KB and Symantec KB and neither had any reference to this problem. Any of my compatriots at VirDr experienced anything similar? If so what did you find as a solution?

Not really familiar with the program, although I have PCAnywhere10, but I would try to reinstall the program, perhaps it has a bad file?

This is not related to your problem but ...

Upgrade to PCAnywhere version 10. Earlier versions' password protection is worthless.

when you upgraded machine, how was that done?
clean fresh install?
of drive migration?

page faults can have a lot of reasons... curious

It was a fresh install of the entire machine and programs, no ghost, but after installing pcANYWHERE I imported (over wrote) the install of pcANYWHERE with the ini from the previous setup so I wouldn't have to recreate the users and their specific allowed rights, etc.

I know that may trigger an alarm in some but I've used that exact method before when moving the program from one machine destined for the scrap heap to another and had no ill effects though those 2 machines were very similar and both running Win95 whereas this was from W95 to W98.

I haven't had time to have someone dial in so that I can get the exact message Steve, if I did it myself from home I wouldn't be able to see and print it. I'll check again Monday with a group in Raleigh that dials in often.

Finally found the answer and as usual when you fight something long enough it usually winds up being simple.

On my previous installation, including now installing on a different Win98 machine, you could leave the setting in the "Application Options / Host Operation / Video mode selection" to the default.

With this IBM graphics Controller - 8281OE - which I've had trouble with before (I had to back it off 2 points to keep my cursor from flickering on web sites with flashing ads) you have to change the setting to "Compatibility".

I'm posting this in case another soul out there has a similar problem with pcANYWHERE causing Explorer crashes. My guess is it's related to this particular graphics setup though.
