HTML5
I am not sure how I got to this site (it was some time ago and I put it aside to work on later)
http://www.youtube.com/html5
and now I am not sure what it is telling me. Is it an offer to install HTML5 on my PC? I do not presently have any problems viewing YouTube videos. I would not want to mess that up.

Youtube by tradition showed video using Adobe Flash, Html5 can under supported browsers view videos in browser without needing flash installed.
Since Flash is going the way of the dodo (and with that the security bugs, associated with flash ), most people regard this as a good thing, unless of course someone wants to use an ancient browser not supporting the new tech.
Old video vs new video ( right click on youtube video to see the player used )

General Winters--
Thanks for your response. Are you therefore suggesting I install the HTML Player? Will this apply only to YouTube video or to other videos?
Again thanks.

No install involved, supported browsers have the code built in , along with various codec support, view that (slash)html5 page with Firefox and then the current Chrome, to see the different levels of codecs etc supported by the browsers.
Think of it like the very first browsers that where text only, then the html tags to allow images where developed, accepted and ratified and new browsers where written to accept and render images using the latest html specs.
It's simply the latest upgrade to the underlying html specifications gaining acceptance.

Jim, I have both on my machine. When I uninstalled Adobe Flash I lost the ability to use some crossword puzzles.

General Winters----
"No install involved, supported browsers have the code built in "
The link I originally posted certainly sounded like an invitation to install HTML5. But when I clicked the "Request the HTML5 Player" button it changed the "Use the default player" sentence to "The HTML5 player is currently used when possible". So I guess YouTube will use HTML5 from now on.
Thank you.
Benton--Thanks for your comment.
