    Constant activity cable modem???

I have the Motorolla Surfboard SB4100 modem and the activity light is constantly on or blinking. I have just noticed this change as of late and I know that it didn't do this when I first installed it. It behaves like this even when I don't habve a browser open. Does ZoneAlarm cause this? Is this normal? When I first set it up (a few weeks ago) the activity would blink here and there, but it would not be lit up like I'm downloading an mpeg movie or something. Just curious. ZoneAlarm is not showing excessive port scans.

    Hi Zen,

Funny that you would post this concern. It hasn't been ten minutes since I had a chat with my cable modem service provider, via real time chat online. The crux of what he said was:

"The reason your activity light blinks on your cable modem when it's not in use, is because of the Red Worm Virus, this virus will not affect your @Home service, but it will make your cable modem blink when there shouldn't be activity."

I had downloaded the Win2K patch several days ago, so I'm not alarmed at this, though it is a tad distracting...

    Happy computing!

Lights a-flashing here, too. Just started last night. I am on Coastaccess. When I saw that flashing, it certainly was incentive to get my firewall installed! (That deed is now finally done.) I was relieved to read the explanation in the other thread this morning.

Thanks, I read the other thread also. Very interesting. I was concerned because unlike other people my ZoneAlarm is not reporting any alerts (only 1 in the last 5 hours).
Ok. Check this out. I was concerned that perhaps ZoneAlarm is not reporting everything. So I deleted my temporary Internet files from a restart to dos-mode.

    c:\windows
    deltree /y tempor~1

upon restart. I get an error message that one of the files from my '...\Temporary Internet Files' folder was not able to run because the location didn't exist. (obviously because I just deleted it. I hadn't delted Tempor~1 files, run Adaware or tauscan, for about a day or so). So, I run Msconfig to take a look at my autoexec.bat file to see what is going on. And it's EMPTY. Same with my Config.sys EMPTY. I also have a Autoexec.nai and Autoexec.nu4 both of which are EMPTY. (I have norton utilities installed). So I ran norton Disk Doctor. Found a whole slew of problems and fixed them. Yet I still have nothing in my Autoexec. Is this a problem? I have never seen this. Windows still starts and runs without error. Mcaffee reports no viruses. same with Tauscan.

also when starting up I notice this during the boot process
    C:\
    C:\
    C:\
    C:\
[EDIT: I get this when I run the autoexec.bat which is empty.]

where is this coming from? Can a computer work alright without anything in the autoexec.bat?

[I did have a dual boot to linux on this computer. Which i can't get to any more. That problem is posted in the other operating systems thread.]

Mine are empty also, actually they are a hold over from DOS days. Windows does not need them.

    Train,
Thanks. Man, I got really worried for a second there. It's funny how you can read threads here, and you start noticing all of these little quirks in your own system that you otherwise would never have noticed. It's almost like reading a medical book, and you think that you have everything in it... lol. Thanks again Train, Nick, Limerick, and Airhead for your posts. Especially for going through that entire last post.

update: I got help from the Other OS'S thread. And got my LILO back.

All the activity seems to be slowing down the Net too. Many pages just will not load and others are taking 30 seconds or more.

I too, have my cable modem constantly flashing as of late. I have not seen any hits on my Zone Alarm though, so I guess it is still doing it's job for me.

It is very annoying to see it flashing all the time though.

Does anyone have any idea how long this will go on?
