Can't any antivirus software company develop something good?

I have tried a few free antivirus softwares which may be effective catching viruses but for heaven's sake they slow down the computer to a ridiculous crawl. I am still willing to try some more, but I wonder if anyone here can recommend a few AV that do not slow down the computer to a noticeable level. Some of the ones I remember using for a while have been: Avast, AVG, Bit Defender, Immunet, Kaspersky, Norton, Trend Micro. Please tell me of your experiences. Thanks.

Avast is quite good and does not slow down the computer at all.

The slow down you notice must have another cause.

MSE that Doc posted runs in the background and does not hog your resources. I've been using it for three years now. It has everything not just an anti-virus. It has anti-virus, anti-spyware/malware, and even catches trojans. I really like this Security software. You should try it out.

One thing that contributes to a/v programs becoming unwieldy behemoths is competition to keep up with and (theoretically) surpass other companies programs by adding more and more features... many of which may not be necessary or quickly and poorly written or developed. It's all about market share and money ultimately.

For example is it really necessary for every a/v company to include a "best, new" firewall with more and more features (like ad blocking) with their antivirus program? I don't think so. Is it really necessary for an a/v to include a VPN or remote computer control utility with their suite? Again, no. But once one company does it then many of the others feel obligated to follow suite.

Another is the very understandable problem with just keeping up with malware. New malware is literally written and unleashed 24/7 so making a/v programs both more reactive and ready to battle these things adds to it's bulk and it's tendency to take over normal computer functions to test things before they are run or even downloaded to your hard drive.

And then there's lower operating budgets, fewer or less accomplished employees/developers and the inevitable rush to market to be the "first", "best", "only", blah blah blah.

No problem there, I am already bald. I been reading about Kingsoft, which seems to be light on PC resources, but there are some reviews saying it is a communist program no longer supported. Do you know if this is true??
