Dell XPS RAM 3 GB Usable

    Hello,

I had a question was hoping someone could answer. My brother had 2x 1GB (2GB) RAM installed on his computer and he wanted to add more RAM. He went to Crucial Memory and did the scan. He got the 4GB Kit (2x 2GB) from there. Yesterday, he installed the RAM and took out the RAM he originally had installed when he purchased his computer. While he was checking out his computer he noticed it said 4GB RAM installed (3GB usable). I've made an attachment if you want to check it out. Here is the scan after he made the upgrade.

Can anybody tell me why he can only use 3GB? Does he need to do something different?

He has a 32 bit OS.

32-bit Windows has an address space of 4GB. Part of that is used by system BIOSes and graphics memory.

With a 256MB graphics card about 3.3-3.5GB of RAM can be addressed and used, assuming you have 4GB fitted.
