I told you. You use papertowellng to soak up the ink. You'll need to get the cartridge holder to move away from where it nornally sits to be able to see the ink pad.

I find that Epson's printing photos is the best I've used.
HP probably is second, but I can tell you about one time I saw a photo printed on an HP and it wasn't pretty at all.
As for Canon, I have no idea how the photos look because I've never owned one and never seen a photo printed on one either.

Do not know how old the cannon was, but after seeing the print, this was a few years ago, I grabbed the image cd and drove 30 miles one way and used my printer.

I compared a picture from my epson nx515 and my Cannon mp 190. I could not tell the difference in quality.
they were both the same.

"Compare the ink cartridges." The epson uses one black and 3 cartridges of different colors. The Cannon uses one big black and
one big three color cartridge. I mostly use my laser printer for black printing and only use the Cannon once in a while if I want color.
I don't know which printer in uses the ink more cheaply but my Epson used the ink up fairly fast.

Did you set the print properties to text and watch those same properties when printing graphics?
Watching and matching the properties to what you want, can extend the life of the cartridges.
My 5 color plus the black is about $100. Let me tell you, the extra 2 colors do make a right nice difference.

Might be cheaper to take the images to walwart or the like and have them print them. Costco does real good work for me.
Gone that route many a time.

No I did not go into properties except when I want to print in black only.
I am satisfied with the picture quality of my Cannon Prixma MP 190. It
appears to be identical to the Epson NX 515 output.

Could be. But I never use the top color setting when the next down does the trick nicely and bunches less ink. Test that Cannon and delay getting a new printer as I looks like it may be/do what you want.

I know how to get the ink cartridge into position to remove them but after I remove them is the ink pad visible? If not how do I move the ink holder out of the way to expose the ink pad.

The ink pad should be visible under where the cartridge holder was sitting before you moved that out of the way. You don't need to remove the cartridges to get access to the ink pad.
