What I would like to know is how I add my contacts manually. I only want a few on this account so don't want to add all the contacts I have on laptop.
Just log into Gmail in your PC's browser and add the contacts. After that, they will be synced to the phone. Otherwise, you can try exporting and importing from your email client into Gmail, but then you would have to filter out the contacts you don't want.

If you want to have some phone only contacts, most phones offer a phone only contact storage area. And depending on the type of phone carrier's technology, they may also use a SIM card which also offers contact storage. The means to access these alternative areas varies from phone to phone.
When you add a contact, there should be a option to choose the type of contact. On my phone, it is a drop down box where I can choose Phone, SIM or Google. Then, within the contact viewer, you should have a menu choice where you choose the types of contacts to view. In my case, I can choose any or all of the 3 choices.
In the FWIW category, I highly recommend that you don't use more than one area to store your contacts. It may seem better to have only the ones you use on your phone only on your phone. But IMO, if they are worth storing, they are worth backing up (which Google does extremely well!) If you want them to be sorted better (friends, family, business and so forth), try using Google contacts groups. To my knowledge, all recent Android phones support Google contact groups. Using groups makes organization of large numbers of contacts very easy. On my phone, 100% of my nearly 400 contacts are Google contacts. But I use several groups to keep them organized.

OK I have set up my contacts for Gmail. Now 2 more questions.
How do I add contacts to a group? When I try to add members it tells me "No contacts found" although I have about 50.
When someone sends me a photo it doesn't show. I get the text and then an message saying expires at time, date and a button saying "Download".
When I try to download says "Currently unavailable try again later". It then changes to "Dowloading" and hangs.
Any help on these two please, and then I might disappear!

For groups, you actually have to do it from Gmail in a browser OR you'd have to download an app to replace contacts/dialer. The plain Android doesn't have groups in contacts. Your phone may be different.

How are you adding users to groups? By default, Android has a "starred in android" aka Favorites.
When someone sends me a photo it doesn't show. I get the text and then an message saying expires at time, date and a button saying "Download".
Your mobile data needs to be on to get MMS messages.

Thankyou, I downloaded that ap. Have grouped my contacts. Now I have no idea how to send an email let alone a group email. Do I need to sign in to G mail or Google? There doesn't seem to be any way I can just do it through the ap.

I don't think Go Contacts EX can do group emails, but I've never tried to do that.
Which email app are you using? Gmail? If it's the Gmail app, just press Menu - Compose. In the "To" field, start typing in the name of the recipient. You can try typing in the name of a group.

OK so I installed Go contacts. Turned the phone off and then on again.
I then got a choice of using Go contacts or the Contacts that came with the phone. I selected Go contacts and I was then able to do a group email through G mail.
However, since then I seem to have lost that setting and has returned to the original one.
I have tried turing the phone off and on again but don't get the choice anymore.
Is there anyway I can change the settings permanently to always select to Go contacts?

Is there a checkbox to choose Go Contacts as the default? Open Go Contacts from the Main Menu, and see if you get the prompt again.
You might want to check the programmer's site or instructions on their Google Play page.

Did that. On the Application info there is an area headed "Launch by default".
In this box it says "No defaults set". There is a dimmed box saying "Clear defaults".
There must be somewhere else I can set this default setting.
This screen doesn't allow me.
As you can tell I am new to all this. Do I have to sync this ap with G Mail perhaps?

You'd want to set Go Contacts as your replacement Dialer/Contacts.
In general, you should check the developer's website to see if they have a support section:
http://www.goforandroid.com/GDTEn/so...oftid=17&nav=4
How to set the “GO dial-up” is default dial-up?
After the successful installation of “GO contacts”, dial-up program in the choice of the system, the system will pop up select the application, please tick the "default used to perform this operation", and then select “GO dial-up”. To cancel the default value, can be in the "Home Page Settings"> "Applications"> "Manage Applications" to clear the default value.

That pop up didn't happen. I'm over it. Think the easiest way is to go back to the phone shop.
Thanks for your help.

So did you go into Applications > Manage Applications and clear the default value? It should have prompted you the next time you open the application.
Well, I guess you tried. Good luck with your next phone. Any smartphone will have a learning curve, so do your research first.
