Huawei smart phone
I have just purchased this phone Model U8815-71.
Having a few problems with settings, hopefully someone can help.
1. I want to delete all the bookmarks.
2. I want to delete all the sites and search engines preset by Vodaphone.
Is there a good reason to create a Google account? I have minimum internet use and don't want lots of stuff that I don't need.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need a gmail account for android. That's how you would backup your contacts as well.
You should be able to go into the browser - menu - bookmarks, and then long press and delete each bookmark. You can set a default homepage. Google should be the default search, but you can set the default homepage to Bing or whatever.
I don't use Vodaphone, so you'll have to be more specific or wait for a Vodaphone user to respond.
You may want to check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/ instead. That's a mobile phone centric forum.

Thanks for advice, however, doesn't work deleting Bookmarks.
When I go into browser, I don't get a menu.
I bring up Bookmarks screen, long press on one and a menu comes up to Edit bookmark which only allows renaming and changing location but not deleting.
Also, can you please explain why I need gmail account. My only reason to use internet is email. I don't want to have to sign into my Isp's webite everytime.
One more question - how do I delete some icons from my screen.

I'm guessing this is your first Android device. You need to press the menu button (bottom left with the horizontal lines). That will get you a lot of additional options. This is true for most apps in Android.

That's a basic requirement of Android. Your contacts and market info (apps) are tied to your Gmail account. You don't need to use Gmail for email if you don't want to. You can set up email from another provider in the Mail app or a third party app like K9.
To delete icons, long press on them and then drag into the trash bin.
You may want to review the manual for the phone basics:

Depending on the manufacturer of your phone, and the deals they made with software providers, some things may be hard coded into the phone. For example, I have a Samsung phone from AT&T. It has the default Android browser that can't be uninstalled. And in that browser, there are several bookmarks that can't be deleted.
Best suggestion I can make is to use a different browser like Dolphin or Chrome. Their setup is likely to be more flexible and to your liking.

Thank you both for your advice. I used to be a Dos Queen, now I'm a dinosaur. This is my first smart phone.
One more question - I decided to set up a Gmail account. All seemed to go ok except for the last step. It is now stuck on a screen saying on top "Waiting for sync" and in the middle of screen "Your email will appear shortly." It has been like this for 24 hours. I cannot get out of this screen.
Any suggestions?

So you weren't connected to Wifi at home? You need to be connected in order to sync. You can disable syncing, but that means you have to manually refresh your contacts/email.

Sorry, I do have a Wifi connection at home for my laptop.
I was connected to the internet when I was trying to set up Gmail.
Maybe I need to create a Google account first?

Your phone Wifi needs to be on in order to log in and sync.
Yes, try creating the Gmail account first.

OK still battling. Have created a Google and Gmail account.
How do I set up my email contacts? I tried importing through the standard Gmail email instructions but nothing happened.
Also, I tested it out but didn't receive email that I sent to my account from my pc. However, it did appear in my inbox on pc.

Have created a Google and Gmail account.
What do you mean Google and Gmail accounts? You just need a gmail address.
Your email messages and contacts should be automatically synced when connected to Wifi or 3G/4G.

Is your phone connected to your home wireless network or not?

On an Android phone, there are 2 ways to set up Gmail. The best one (right one IMO) is to use the Gmail app. You can still use the Email app but it doesn't sync the contacts and calendar.
Like Midknyte says, if you set up the correct app (Gmail) the contacts and calendar should sync just like the email.
Here is a video from T-Mobile that goes over the basic (initial) setup.

Thank you both. I did set up my Gmail through the App. It is working ok.
What I would like to know is how I add my contacts manually. I only want a few on this account so don't want to add all the contacts I have on laptop.
