    Second Monitor

I have an IBM ThinkPad T-43 with a docking station. When I plug
a second monitor in the dock it gets a signal then goes to sleep
right away. Do I have to activate a second monitor on my T-43. How?

I assume that you are pressing the appropriate Fn key combination to activate the external display port (Fn+4)? The link below might be useful:

The web site offered no clues. What is the combination of F keys I have to
    press for dual monitors?

If you can decipher the symbols on the keyboard, those should indicate which key plus the Fn key you need. dneilson's link would indicate Fn+F7, but check your keyboard markings.

There should be a key labeled Fn, usually in a blueish gray colour, probably on the lower left of the keyboard, beside the Ctrl key.

Press it down and tap F7

If you notice some of the F keys have a second icon on them, also in the same blueish gray colour, meaning they can be turned on or off with the Fn key.

Jerry - did you look on the keyboard

And if you see (which you should) press the fn key and then the F7 key.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

You have an "Fn" key--it's on the bottom row on the left.
