Resolved [RESOLVED] ??? on wireless card

I was wondering if a new wireless card would improve my Mbps,I can currently connect at 18Mbps wireless using the D-LinkAirplus DWL-G520 rev.B in my Desktop.Using Cat5 I get 7Mbps with the 3com 3C900B-TPO ethernet card.I have a Laptop that get 25Mbps wireless and 50Mbps using an ethernet cable plugged directly into the Belkin N600 DB router. If I were to upgrade the ethernet card and cabling I'm at about the cost ($29) of a new DWA- 525 (I currently have an approx.15ft cat5 and would need a 25ft. to rig it permanent). The Desktop is the one in my sig,so would there be any improvement in going the new wireless card or is my OS/old Hardware limiting any potential increase in Mbps?

    Note:Mbps were gotten via speedtest.###

Wirelessly, I do believe it will help matters. But 25 ft of cat 5 should be the faster.

Going from G to N should do the trick.

I used the 15 foot and ran it, as the crow flies, across the living room to test the speed and it was only 7Mbp.If I'm going with Cat5 it's gonna mean an PCI ethernet card upgrade too apparently ,so if I can avoid running cable and still get better download times (than I currently have)I'd rather go that way.Should add ,that I'm on Shaw and the package is only for 50Mbps,so if I can achieve close to that with a new wireless card?

    Try http://www.speedtest.net/
    and see what you get.

Now see what kind of download speeds you get XP SP3
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24

    I averaged about 1.8 MB/Sec.

And this is the best I ever saw. Guess that snow storm forced them to fix things.

    Using the laptop and wireless.

Not much difference as you see. Using a Linksys 4200 router.

Desktop is running SP3 and current updates,Laptop running Vista and all current updates. That is what caused me to look at the wired vs wireless ,the laptop d/l all necessary updates OS/Software etc.. very quickly ,the XP machine took longer . speedtest.net confirmed this per first post

Are your speeds close to what your ISP states as your download speed?

Yes, they are close. But after the snow/rain/ice storm things were all balled up with 7 to 9 MB/sec as the max for about a week or more.

Dual core verses single core rigs?

How long has XP been installed? Over 2 years, I always do a clean install as it does make a difference.

Have you power cycled the modem and router? That has gotten me more than a few times over the years.

Your 3com 3C900B-TPO card runs at 10 Mbps max. It belongs in a museum.
