Working on dell desktop and been running slow as a snail. I tryed all tricks I learned from here. Now I need Virtual Dr help. I ran malwarebytes, superantispyware, combofix and este online scanner and still lags. In safe mode the machine runs quick but in normal mode it doesnt. Would do the highjack this but dont know how to read the logs. Can I get some help please. I have till saturday to get the machine back to my freind.

Sluggish machines aren't always about software or malware. What Dell model is this computer? It could be something to do with hardware.

Btw, hijackthis isn't used any more.

If you still think it might be malware/spyware, follow the rules in the link below and post your logs in that forum.

It could be that something is hogging the CPU cycles. Right-click the Taskbar and choose Task Manager, then in the Processes tab make sure that CPU & CPU Time columns are selected (View>Select Columns). Click twice on the CPU column header and that will put the process that is using the most CPU cycles at the top. Make sure that "Show processes from all users" is checked. Ignore System Idle Process, a high value for that is a good thing.

wont be off work for 4 more hours then will post information. I did install microsoft securtity essentials but on log in the castle stays red and wont let me start it. Also there was a ton of startup programs in msconfig and I disabled them all for now. Is there a list of the essential startup programs that should be enabled?

256MB isn't nearly enough for XP. It really needs 1GB, but 2GB is better still.

I wholeheartedly agree. Since you'll already be in there though, go ahead and plug in 2GB (the maximum).
