Computer boots at repair shop but not at home

My cousin has a XP machind with all patches applied.
The problem is the computer will not boot.
It starts to boot then shuts down.
She took to to two repair shops where it booted fine at both shops. Each time she took it home it booted once and then it would not boot up again.
Both shops told her she has a electrical broblem at her house.
Everything else in the home work fine TV etc.
Does any one have any input on this situation as it would be greatly appreciated Thank You

Has she plugged the pc into a wall socket in a different room or at your house?

If there is a problem with the Earth (Ground) connection, it can cause the mains voltage to "float". Most equipment would not be much affected, but the switch-mode power supplies in computers don't like that at all. That would be my guess as to what it might be, and as there is a potentially very serious safety issue, it would be worth having the mains wiring properly checked.

Time to get the voltage checked in the house.

Freezers, air conditions on the same circuit can cause that, plus the surge when they shut down can blow up the computer, when they shut down.

shoe--It has already been asked. Has she used the PC at someoneelse's house?
But also the trip to the repair shops might allow a cooling off period. Test the power supply module or better yet have it replaced.

Sho took it to her daughters house yesterday and it would not boot there either

In that case, I suspect the power supply unit is the next most likely culprit. If you have, or can borrow, a multimeter, here's how to test the power supply:

Or alternatively you can buy a proper PSU tester, they don't cost much:

That wouldn't by any chance be an eMachine would it? Post the make and model of the computer.

Some Gateways have the same nasty power supply and that is why we asked for the make and model of the computer so were can research and see if there is a history of them with that make and model.
So, please post the information requested.

Hi, I am having this EXACT issue... I just installed a new GPU and... my pc wont boot here or at the neighbors, but when I travel across town it boots at the pc store like new.

I have tried all outlets in the home, I have tried testing the voltage in all outlets, 130 volts. I have taken all of my things to the shop to see if there was a driver conflict... everyone is baffled as to why it isn't working at home or at the neighbors but does work at the computer store, help?

Thank you for the quick response... I am not currently using one, but... am quite close to buying one. Do you think its a possible fix?
