Resolved [RESOLVED] Installing Netscape 4.8 in Windows 7?

I have a client with a new PC running 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium - SVC Pack 1 (I think), with Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.9 installed and running well.

The old server that was replaced, 32-bit Win XP, had Netscape Communicator 4.8 installed and running, and there are some old SENT Emails and TEMPLATES that they need to import into Thunderbird. However, just copying the entire old directory, including all the data and folders, to the new machine doesn't work. I'm sure it's because Netscape hasn't actually been installed and updated the Registry, etc., for file locations. Even worse, I d/l'd the Netscape 4.8 installation program, but it won't install under the 64-bit version of Windows.

I've tried installing it running Windows XP compatibily settings, but this also fails. Any work-arounds come to mind? Knowing that 4.8 ran under XP, I'm surprised that I can't install it with XP compatibility mode.

Guessing that TBird has an import function.. What happens when you point it to the email files/folders you copied over?
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Yes, trying to use the built-in IMPORT function in TBird.

You can't... there is no dialog for file location, browsing, etc.. It appears as though it expects to find the location information it needs on it's own. I'm suspecting that probably means registry entries that are updated only during the actual program install for NS 4.8. I can't find any other reference to the folder/file/location anywhere else...

If you can find out the path used for the files, you can recreate it and any registry entries for it. Otherwise, you will need an XP computer that you can reinstall Netscape on so you can export the files.

You could use a Virtual PC.. aka (MS's) Virtual PC-2007, VMWare, or Virtual Box.. Pity the OS is not Ultimate or Pro - XPmode could have made the answer even easier..

Smile Netscape 4.8 Working in 64 bit Windows 7

I use Netscape 4.8 almost exclusively for editing web pages. I had a copy installed on a 32 bit version of Windows-7. I just copied the entire folder from C:\Program Files and put in the folder C:\Program Files (x86) on the 64 bit system. Doubled clicked on the Netscape.exe file and everything seems
    to be working so far.

Sometimes that works. I have added hdds that had a OS installed and put shortcuts to a program on the desktop and had them work. Worth a try at least.
