    Resolved [RESOLVED] AutoRun.inf in USB

I have an Autorun.inf file on a USB that worked in Windows XP but not in Windows 7. Does anyone know why? I tried tweaking the gpedit.msc but not sure if I tweaked the right part for Autorun. I even tried NoDriveTypeAutoRun in the registry too. Not sure if I am doing something incorrectly.

    Thanks

Autorun.inf Does Not Work In Windows 7 Anymore

MSDN Blogs > Engineering Windows 7 > Improvements to AutoPlay

Windows 7 introduces key changes to AutoPlay that keep you from being exposed inadvertently to malware like Conficker when doing your common scenarios with devices (e.g., get to the files on your USB flash drive, download pictures from an SD card, etc.).

In particular, Windows will no longer display the AutoRun task in the AutoPlay dialog for devices that are not removable optical media (CD/DVD.) because there is no way to identify the origin of these entries. Was it put there by the IHV, a person, or a piece of malware? Removing this AutoRun task will block the current propagation method abused by malware and help customers stay protected. People will still be able to access all of the other AutoPlay tasks that are installed on their computer.

FWIW... If you have a USB drive that runs a AUTORUN.inf related function, I would heavily advise never using it on anything but your own computer(s). If you do not use a locked down (non-functioning) type of AUTORUN.inf file on your flash drive, it is at serious risk of spreading malware sourced from other PCs. IMO (unfortunately!) the days of using flash drives between multiple computers without taking special care is gone.

Some of the worst places for incidents like this are schools. Most require the use of flash drives and I have seen infections spread from school to home as soon as the infected drive is plugged in. Literally in a matter of a couple seconds!

See this thread for more info on how to protect a flash drive http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...d.php?t=238013
