what software to split up video files
A friend of mine used his video capture card to convert a couple of VHS tapes to .mpgs, but now I want to split them up into scenes, and I'm looking for some software that can easily do this.
I tried ulead video studio, but I spend the last hour trying to deciper how to do this. The interface is tragically non intuitive and the help was written by a dead kangeroo.
I also tried vegas movie studio but it appears the only type of file it can read is a vegas movie project file.
Windows movie maker wouldn't import the original, I think because it was too big.
I found one that is magic to use (naturpic video cutter) but it knocks the video out of sync with the sound.
Help!

My method: First, you need a software to change them to dvd compatible VOB files. Nero Vision Express can do this,or this program will convert them.(dnload at bottom of page).
Then you can use DVDShrink to cut out what you want(or don't want). Save as vob only and to keep them in order, rename the files to: 001,002,003,etc. You may then use the Nero express prog to rejoin them into one video...
Keep in mind however, that if the VHS tapes were commercial, ripping them is illegal.
Stupid question? No such thing!

At work I use Boilsoft splitter ... it's not free (35 dollars US) but there is a 30 day trial.
http://www.boilsoft.com/videosplitter/
It's very easy to figure out.. there's a default setting for cutting it in half (or multiple equal sized chunks) or you can use start/finish time buttons below the built in viewer to select sections to extract.

They're camcorder vids of my own, not commercial ones.
I have dvd shrink, but I don't see any tools in there for editing.
I'll find a copy of videsplitter and give it a try, thanks for the ideas so far.
