Well, as was always likely I guess ...
After successfully testing this on and off all day, this method has now stopped working for me. Back to square one and waiting for Microsoft to address the problem.

Review Pane in Outlook 2010 Does Not Refresh
I came upon this thread trying to find a solution to this problem. My user was having an issue with the Reading Pane not refreshing when he used the arrow keys. It would only refresh by clicking on another message. I finally realized the problem was with his wireless keyboard and mouse. Once we switched him to wired devices, his refresh issue was resolved!
