Hey Jim; If I hit the Win-key +F I get nothing. (I mean, I get the search window, but nothing happens.) I don't even get the green progress bar. And, of course, I do type in my search criteria first.
I understand you did enter the term for which you are searching into the Search line (top right). Did you click the magnifying glass?
I wonder if we are talking about different Search programs. I certainly never get that Error message you show in post #10 even if there are no results.

It might take a couple of hours or so to finish but will not cause any long term slowdowns or aftereffects.
I'm going to give that a try.

I got that error when invoking the search function from the "Start Bar". If I do a search from Windows Explorer, (which appears to be the same window that opens if I just start the search program), I click the magnifying glass, and get a pop-down menu that shows my latest search terms. I click "test.txt" and it immediately shows something like "no files found", or somesuch. I can't tell you the exact phrase because I'm doing the "search index rebuild" that fink suggested now. I'll post a screenshot as soon as the rebuild is finished.

I have used Agent Ransack for years and I find it has always been better than Microsoft search. I does seem strange that Microsoft cannot, after all these years, make a decent search agent.

Whats worse is, "search" worked fine for me in XP. They just seemed to break it in Win 7. (I skipped Vista.)
And yes, this question has become somewhat academic since AR works so well. Still, I'd like to fix it if possible. It seems odd that for others, it works fine.
