Disappearing Installation

I am trying to install a program onto the Win98 partition of a 98/XP dual boot setup.
I have installed this program dozens of times before on both OS's.
After installation and exiting the installation screen, a very strange thing happened....

• The desktop icon for the program disappeared.
• The program was not found in the START menu
• The program's folders were not found in Windows Explorer
• It was not shown in Add/Remove Programs.

Reinstalled again.... same results.

Copied installation files onto HD and installed in Safe Mode.... same results.

I am stumped

Does the installation folder where the program would be installed appear in Windows Explorer? If not, what happens if you try to manually create a folder with the same name?

I don't know... why do you think that would work? I am willing to try anything, but I won't be playing with it for a little while.... I'll get back.

If you are not seeing any activity after the installation "completes" then it is possible that the installation is really there and a rootkit is preventing you from seeing it. THat is why I asked if the installation folder appeared in Explorer, and, if not, if you could manually create one.

More questions:

1. What program are you trying to install?
2. Does the program icon appear, then disappear on the desktop, or dopes it never appear?
3. If the icon appears and then disappears, do you see any continued hard drive activity (check the LED) after this happens, and for how long?

Thanks for your help..

1. The Program is Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Challenge (A golf game)
2. The Program icon does appear, then immediately disappears after I close the installation screen.
3. I'll have to check for that, maybe tomorrow... if I have time.

What happens if, instead of closing the installation window, you press Control+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager, then use the End Task option to cancel the installation program? Does the desktop icon still disappear?
