Well,,here goes. My PC= XPPro-ServPk 3. Asus A8N-E AMD Dual Core Athlon 939pin at:2420mhz. 2 Gigs PC3200 DDR 440 Sdram run in dual channel.
About 3 days ago, i started getting pop-ups on the task bar that say: USB device not recognized. One of the USB Devices Attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, Click this message. Clicking the message, brings up this box:
Which, as it turns out means nothing. I unplugged my USB scanner and USB printer(which were working just fine) and still kept getting the popup. I exchanged my USB mouse with another with no difference. I finally put a USB to PS-2 adapter on the mouse and plugged it into the PS-2. No difference. Still get the popup. The popups come up randomly like every few seconds to several minutes between them. Device Mangler shows only the printer attached. I've tried all the other USB plug-ins with the printer and it works in all of them, but I still get the d*mn popup. Have checked and exchanged all the USB cables with no satisfaction. The one thing that happened that was different, was before I changed the mouse from USB. On bootup, the mouse was dead. It's(they)are wired optical. Tried it in other USB plugs, but was still dead. That's when I used the PS2 adapter and then it worked. Beginning to think it may be a screwed USB system on the Mobo.It 'has' been around for over 3 years now. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If that still doesn't work, replace the following files from a known good system or from the XP CD. Preferably, use a slipstreamed XP SP3 CD.
put .inf files in C:\Windows\inf
usb.inf
usbstor.inf
put .sys files in C:\Windows\system32\drivers
usbd.sys
usbehci.sys
usbhub.sys
usbintel.sys (i'd skip this one since you have an nvidia chipset)
usbport.sys
usbuhci.sys
New chip driver,no difference. I have the i386 folder in my C:\ folder because I use the tweak to use the file scanner without the CD.And yes,ServPack3 is in the folder. All the files given by Midnyte are in the corresponding folder in Windoze folder but no difference. I've run system file checker which 'should' replace any damaged files to be on the safe side, but no difference. I've shut off USB in BIOS and no longer get the dumb popup. But of course,my printer is disabled with this setting. Beginning to think even more I'll need to do a re-build and dump the motherboard...

HAN,thanks for the prog you suggested. However,it won't make any changes to the system USB. It just tells you everything that was connected to the port(s) the last time around. Which it did. Trouble is,it showed all connections as my USB optical mouse. Because I plugged it to every port when checking them. When I came over here earlier today,I tried to type this and my keyboard was dead(PS2). Tried re-plugging with no go. Re-booted and numlock light came on and it worked!?(sighhh)
decided to do a re-build to this PC with new mobo/CPU, video and everything else hardware wise that's aged. That'll give me the excuse to install Win7 Ultimate that I've been itchin' to do for awhile now.
Wan'na thank you guys for your interest and help...
