Avast 5
Guys, I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with the new Avast, but I have to say a couple of things in it's defense. First, I've put it on seven machines since it came out with no problem at all. Second, yesterday and today I ran Super Anti-spy, Malware Anti-malware, and a tracking cookie cleaner on a Compaq; the first 3 found roughly 1400 pieces of malware (1300 or so were tracking cookies). Then I did a boot scan with Avast; it picked up 9 trojans and a rogue av. Seems to me that's such a big improvement over the old Avast it deserves a heck of a lot of credit. If you can get your installation problems worked out I think you'll like it.

What actually happens, when you try to install 4.8, or 5?

buf: All you need to run the uninstall tool is have a folder for it to point to. If there are any other leftovers, registry entries and so forth, it should catch them. If you create a folder named Alwil in the C:\Program Files folder, you can run the uninstaller. (So the actual path would be C:\Program Files\Alwil )
You can do this for both the version 4 uninstaller and the version 5 one.

I agree that it's really an impressive product. Eliminates all the old criticisms (like the not so hot GUI) and IMO, sets the bar for others to follow.

Knowing that I needed AV protection immediately, I downloaded/installed Avira last night. I gave up on getting Avast installed last night and decided to tackle the issue today(Monday). I have now removed the Avast folder (with the aid of the utility tool in the link Broni posted found in my Program files as HAN pointed out) downloaded and saved both version 4 and 5 in a work folder. Avira is looking pretty darn good and I will stay with it for a few days to be sure I do really like it. Installation was easy and configuring was easy. I may just like it better than Avast---may.Avira-Avast is so similar in spelling; makes one wonder which came first.
Would really be irony if laster I can't install Avast if I should remove Avira Thanks again fellas, including old folks encouragement.
EDIT: I have not missed using this slow poke machine. Will not look forward to using it any time soon.

Is anyone using MSE? (Microsoft Security Essentials) Suppose to cover everything. Seems to work OK except it has problems with start up. They know they have a problem.

Buf--I posted another long thread here about the Avast problems, which were rife. Shortly after I tossed it out, and posted on their forum that it's full of bugs, they came up with a fix. The remover didn't work either, and I cleaned it up with RevoUninstaller.
MSE is OK for viruses, not as good on spyware and adware.
Broni showed us how to remove Avira's ads, but they come back after Window updates. They're tolerable.

I had avast until Saturday when I put in MSE. There problem is it don't run on start up and it's suppose to. You have to start it or you can't get updates. I am running XP, I think it works OK with windows 7. MS want you to remove all other security programs. One thing to remember is MS already has a firewall built in

MS firewall works in only one direction. Just about everyone turns it off and install a 3rd party firewall.

Finally got Avast ver 5 to install. Quite impressed so far. Uses less resources than 4.8 as well.

back to Avast
Uninstalled MSE today and put back Avast, the new one ver 5.
Even with support I couldn't it work.
