    How do I know?

if someone is using my wireless router for their internet connection. My next door neighbor is a computer technology teacher at a local high school. He's a good neighbor, but very cheap. How can I tell if someone is jumping on my router. I have it WEP protected, but as I understand, that's not always totally secure. I'm using DSL and there are times when my internet gets slow.(late afternoon) I've heard that DSL shouldn't be affected by the number of users on a line like cable. Thanks.

You can look in Network Neighborhood for pc's....The one that aren't yours - belong to someone else

Nobody should be using wep. very easy to crack so your neighbours kids could be using your internet. wpa or if possible wpa2 should be used. Or don't use wireless for even better security.

My router allows me to see all dhcp provided addresses and also connected hosts.

What you can do is sniff network traffic with network monitor or wireshark or whatever and filter for arp messages. arp requests will be sent periodically by all hosts and if you see an unrecognised ip on your network, you know it is an intruder.

How to find the perpertrator? good luck. You'll need a directional antenna and a program for scanning for wireless traffic which you can home in on via the perps mac address which will be broadcasting to your router

I don't need to find the person using it. I just want to make it more secure to stop it. I'll have to look at WPA to find out how to install it. I'm on Verizon DSL with a Westell 327W versa link modem/router. This router comes from Verizon, maybe I should check with them on WPA? Thanks.

Actually, WPA has also been hacked, but it isn't quite as easy to do. Use WPA2 if you can.
