Another Vista Update Issues thread

This thread started over in the Hijack This forum. Broni fixed some stuff for me but I am back to the issue that started the investigation.

Sisters laptop did an update on 10/15/09 for Windows Vista. Since then she has been getting this error message in response to the automatic updates that have tried to occur.

Bondi took me through the cleaning process and we found 23 issues IIRC of viruses and trojans. She doesn't know what put them on there, but I think they interfered with her updates.

Her computer appears to have all updates completed on it when you run Belarc Advisor on it. This service pack update should have been done a long time ago, so I am speculating something is causing the computer to believe it needs the update when it really doesn't.

Is there any way to start over on the update list and reset the flags on what has updated and what has not?

First you should download Vista SP1 and also SP2 and put them on either a flash drive or a cd. Large SP's should not be attempted as part of auto updates, as most will have trouble that way. Links below to both service packs for downloads.

SP1: 435MB file size

SP1 must be installed first or SP2 will not install

If you still have issues installing from cd or flash drives
then try the steps listed below and see if that helps.

Please follow the steps Given below

1. Unnistall the Anti virus software
2.Perform a clean boot, goto START>MSCONFIG> Enter>Select StartupTAB
>Disable all>then select Services TAB > Hide All Microsoft Services>Apply or
OK>
3. Goto Start>services> enter> Stop the windows udpate services
4.Goto Start>Computer>Local Disk C:\>Windows>Software distribution folder>
Try to rename it as SD.OLD
5.Restart the system and Try to install SP1
6.After completing the SP1 installation Please Goto START> MSCONFIG> General
TAB>Select Normal Startup > Select Apply or OK
7.Restart the system in normal mode You SP1 installation is done.

Also,

IF the updates are on there as I suspect they may already be, what affect will this have?

I say that I think they are already there, because she has been using this laptop without issues until a week or so ago. It had all the updates working properly and auto updating, but suddenly it started failing updates and then this SP1 update failure started.

Turning off the AV should be enough.
And when you install SP1 from the cd / flash drive, if
it already has the newer file, it will just skip it and move
on to the next one.

For some reason her computer does not recognize my flash drive.

Any issues with d/ling these updates directly to the laptop and then executing them?

No, you can save the full downloads and then run the setup in each.

Installing SP1 now.

OK.

I have tried installing SP1 by itself. Failed. Same error code of 8000ffff
Tried using SAFE mode. Failed. 8000ffff

Microsoft help forums are suggesting the nuclear option since I had trojans and viruses...backup all data and reformat.

Any more ideas before that? I don't have a problem doing that, have done it plenty of times before, but would like to resolve this without going nuclear.
