    Resolved [RESOLVED] External Harddrive problem

Ok, so I got a new External Hard Drive for my birthday, which was September 2. The problems I'm having is:

    -It doesn't autoplay like it should (I checked the autoplay settings and it's set to autoplay every device) Sometimes it DOES autoplay though, most of the time it doesn't. Now this goes on to my next problem;

-When it doesn't autoplay, the "Generic Volume" is still running, so when I try to shut it down (my HD), it brings up that error and says it's still running. I check task manager, nothing's open, nothing's running. Everything associated with my HD is shut down. The thing that's keeping it up is the fact it won't launch autoplay. I can fix this by disabling the autplay for all devices, but I want it to autoplay on everthing. I don't know how to stop autoplay on the HD it self though.

So those are my 2 problems. Now I noticed, the only way I can get it to safely turn off, is if I encounter a runtime error. I get these often when I open something that triggers it, I have no viruses or adware or malware. They're windows explorer runtime errors, so any folder I have open, closes... I guess when the runtime error occurs, it stop the autoplay that's trying to open with my HD, therefore letting me safely remove my HD after wards.

Now how can I fix these problems? The runtime error is going to take a Vista CD to fix the corrupt file. So I might not be able to fix anything myself.

    hmmm

To use the Safely remove, sometimes you need to do it twice to stop things.
I noticed that with external hdds.

There was a Windows Update that changed autoplay a few months ago. I suspect that is the source of your autoplay problem.

Already tried! Didn't work. I even went in and tried to stop everything, didn't work either.

Hmmm, I'll try that and let you know!

also, I have about 65 updates ready to download, is there anywhere I can search to see which ones are (if applicable) bad?

No that I know of. You'd have to look up each KB. 65 updates? Why did you wait so long?

Well they date back to April. Idk, I usually ignore updates because I'm not sure which ones are bad...

guess I'll have a lot of searching to do lol.

anyways, that update for the autoplay did not work. Should I remove the update?

The update does not repair autoplay. It's meant to prevent autorun to protect you from Conficker.

Win32/Conficker has multiple propagation methods. These include the following:

    * Exploitation of the vulnerability that is patched by security update 958644 (MS08-067)
    * The use of network shares
    * The use of AutoPlay functionality

Hmmm. I'm confused. Does this mean my external is infected with Conflicker? or no?

To stop conflictor from ruining things for you, the patch stopped autoplay.

sigh. That's my point. If autoplay/autorun is not working the way you want it to, that's probably because Microsoft doesn't want it enabled in the first place. You can keep trying if you want, but MS is not recommending it.

Well, it use to work just fine? and now it doesn't.

Oh, and I have a quick question about the updates. How would I know if it's legit or not? Does this page tell me anything? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

What do you mean if it's legit? I haven't heard of anyone spoofing Windows Updates.

TAs long as you leave the drivers alone, you should be OK.
