new security essentials

I've just installed the new microsoft anti-virus program and it seems to have 'done away' with defender? Does it take the place of antivirus and defender?

Are you still running any other antivirus program? Windows Defender seemed happy to coexist. I wonder if Security Essentials will be.

I uninstalled Avast to give it a fair test, was just curious about Defender. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's gone!

I can't say it was a virus or spyware or something else that got me, but I've had a whole range of strange faults which took me ages to clear (there's a thread in the Vista section if anybody is interested!)

So, I'm currently back with Avast, Defender, Spysweeper and I'm trying Online Armour as my new firewall.... so far all OK (appart from a new issue of regular line drops on my broadband, Green light stays on on router, but the only way to restore is to switch it off, wait, and start again )

What is gone? Security Essentials? Did you uninstall it, or it just departed on its own? Or did you feel it allowed malware to infect your PC?
What is the URL of your Vista post?

Sorry, that was a bit vague wasn't it I uninstalled it, not because I knew for sure it missed something but because I just wasn't sure it didn't... if that makes sense.

I wonder if Security Essentials had much of a chance to show what it can do under those circumstances.
There is an article in the October issue of PCWorld about Security Essentials. Somewhat complimentary.

After reading all the issues you had, I do not see how MSE was at fault. I have been running it since it came out in beta on an XP Pro SP3 box and it has performed well. And as Jim noted, it has been getting pretty decent reviews. I don't recall seeing anyone with a borked box like you have had to suffer through...

As I said, I don't know that it DID do anything and I don't know that it DIDN'T, and I have put Defender back on.
Once I upgrade to 7 I'll probably add it back on too, but will I be able to run Avast at the same time? (just in case!)

Nope. 2 antiviruses that have real-time components running at the same time is a recipe for problems (system slowdowns, missed malware, etc.)

And contrary to what some think/say, just turning off real-time scanning in the GUI is not enough. There are often system level services running behind the scenes.
