    QWINSTA

    Hello,

I prefer to use the command line utilities (qwinsta and rwinsta) to view and manage Terminal Service sessions on my servers. I have a new installation of Win7 Ultimate 64bit running on my laptop.

When I open a command prompt, it defaults to the C:\Windows\System32 directory. When I type qwinsta, it says it cannot find the file. When I type "dir qw*", all it lists is qwave.dll.

So here's the weird part. If I open Windows Explorer to the System32 directory, the qwinsta.exe file exists! Why would it show up in Explorer, but not from a command prompt?

I'm logged in with my domain admin account......

    Thanks!

Good luck figuring out this one....Tested it on XP and all was welll. Maybe you need to play around with the UAC settings?

No doubt. I couldn't believe it myself. I've walked away from my computer, got a cup of coffee, came back and looked again. The issue remains.

It worked fine with my previous Win7 installation (32bit). These are native utilities that are installed with 64bit, so I can't imagine that being the problem.

    Need to elevate.
    See if this helps out.

OK Train. You win the prize. That resolves the problem.

However....I cannot change the Compatibility settings of cmd.exe to always run ad Administrator (it's greyed out).

I verified once again that I am a member of the local administrator's group.

    Thoughts?

Put a short cut to both on the desktop or whereever you want and remember to R-click and elevate to start with.

Just my guess on how to do it.

Yeah. That does work. What I failed to mention is I use a utility called 'Launchy' which allows me to kick off programs by typing the first few characters of the name. For example, I can type 'not' and open Notepad, 'cmd' will open the command prompt. As you can tell, I prefer keyboard shortcuts over a mouse.

Silly, I know. But when you're used to doing something......

I bet if I dig into it, I can find a registry entry for 'run as admin'. I'll look into it this weekend and keep you posted.

(I'd still like to know what changed since my previous install)

Guess someone thought we do not need access to a lot of things in Vista. And 7 is a Vista upgrade. . . . .
