    Trojan Horse VB.ITS - no internet

    I am working on a computer that had the referenced infection. I seemed to have cleaned it, but I am having residual trouble. First of all the trojan disassociated EXE files as applications so I corrected that. I used Mozilla without issue.

    When I opened IE the internet ceased working and could not obtain an IP address. When I went back to Mozilla it opened on the last page I had and would not navigate away. I then used WinsockFix to correct the problem and I was back in business. However, I clicked a link to go to a website and it opened in IE. The problem has returned and I cannot connect to the internet. WinsockFix does not correct the problem. I am only connecting via a LAN ethernet cable and USB modem connection but neither work.

    Below are the logs per the instructions. Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi and welcome to the VDr forums .

    =========

    Download an update for MBA-M from here; http://www.gt500.org/malwarebytes/database.jsp and put it onto the infected PC and double click to run it.
    It will self install to the MBA-M folder.
    Start MBA-M and do a full scan. Remove what it finds. Reboot the pc.

    ====

    Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell4me.com/mywaybiz

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [exec] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mskhcy.exe

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mskhcy.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
    Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Post the MBA-M log also.
    Let me know if there has been any improvement.

    crunchie,

    I followed the instructions, but this did not fix the problem. MBA-M found more threats. The program mskhcy.exe was not present in the hijackthis scan or the Sys32 file. Logs below.

    Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Physically disconnect from the internet.
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

    Note:
    Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

    Run Combofix ONCE only!!

    I replied that the problem has been solved by rerunning WinsockFix but it must not have made it up. The problem has been solved. Do I still need to run CF?

    Because of what MBA-M has found, I would still recommend running as per my instructions.

    Also, if you are able to access the internet now, run MBA-M again and use it's internal updater to update again. Run another full scan and see what is found.

    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
    • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
    • Select it and click Remove.
    • Then Download and install the newest version from here:
    • http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean.

    ===============

    Let's get rid of Combofix now that we are finished with it.
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.
    1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
    2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
    3. Close when finished.

    ====

    An alternative to Ccleaner is ATF Cleaner.
    Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

    Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main choose:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Cookies
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache

    *The other boxes are optional*
    Then click the Empty Selected button.

    Firefox:
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Opera:
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    ====

    Use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera, which in my opinion, is better still.

    ====

    Use a firewall. It is an essential part of your computers security. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    ====

    Install and keep updated,
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebyt...are_d5756.html)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Download the update from here if you have problems.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

    ====

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    ====

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

    =====

    For XP users.
    After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
    To flush the XP system Restore Points.

    Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

    When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
    On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

    Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

    Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

    Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

    Please mark this thread as solved if all is well.

    If you have any more problems, post back.
