Thanks for all your help, it seems there was a corrupt file in his Mac and he took it to a Mac centre. I have taken the liberty of copying his email to me.
Well Well Well,
Fixed, very interesting Spent Two whole hours talking with the Governor! Who downloaded wirelessly 780 Mbs in two minutes of 10.57
Then continued to down load further updates, and there are heaps, the trouble was finding the corrupted file which he did bygoing straight to apple and asking where to look. Problem pin pointed and irradicated home and hosed at a total cost of $35 plus getting there of course.
Again thanks for all your help. Its a pity there are not more Mac users on The V Dr

Reading over your last post maybe we should have tried to get them to update to 10.5.1 first and if that worked then make the jump to the latest version. Many times the first version of any OS has many bugs that could cause a problem. I am so glad it's all sorted i know the frustration they must have felt i had all that when i started out with the mac but my father inlaw was a great help for me knows heaps of mac stuff as he worked for apple for years and is a real mac nerd.
Macbook pro 17" 2.8GHz C2D, ipod touch and a iphone4.
