[RESOLVED] ping timing out
I have 2 comp's, both with XP Pro, hard connected to a router which is powered by my cable modem...both have internet access.
I used the network set up wizard and both have the same workgroup name.
I can ping my ( steve's) computer from the 2nd computer.
I cannot ping the 2nd computer from my ( steve's) )computer.
I looked under Administrator under "user rights assignments" and "everyone" and "users" was listed. I tried adding my daughter's name\Group name to the list but the ping still times out.
I went to the web site of the Airlink router and looked at all of the settings and it seems to be ( seems to be...) okay.
When I run 'IPconfig /all'...both comps show ip addresses and same sub net mask addresses...etc.
I tripled/quadrupled checked that both comps had the same group name.
I have Comodo on both systems and tried momentarily dis-abling Comodo on the 2nd comp., that wasn't it.
Ohhh...on my computer, when I click on "view workgroup computers"...both comps show up but when I try to access the 2nd, a box says that I may not have permission...and that the network path was not found.
So...two items: possible permission situation...and not having a network pathway....??
On the 2nd comp...under Network Connections...Lan orHigh Speed Internet..., it shows two connections: #1 ...Connected, firewalled,...NVidia nForce Networking Controller. ( onboard controller ). #2... 1394 Connected, Firewalled,..1394 Net Adapter.
I just cannot figure this one out... ...surely it's a step or two that I have missed.

Are you pinging the computer name or it's IP address? Try the address if you haven't.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Steve....My first reaction to your question was a laugh... ...that was a good one... !
Yes...I pinged the ip address of my daughter's comp from my comp and it times out....but I can ping from her's to mine.
One of the suggestions in the help section was to log off/on and see if that helps...but it did not.
My main purpose for networking the comps is to be able to download pictures on one comp and then be able to copy them over to other comp. Also for printer sharing.

Eureka!!...literally...! I did another Google for the problem and firewalls kept being mentioned, so I did some looking at my firewall settings. And Lo and Behold...under 'security' and then under 'Network Control Rules', the last item in the list had not been allowed. I changed it to allow....and that was the problem... .
But, earlier, at one of my attempts to find the problem, I thought that I had dis-abled the firewall completely ( maybe not as completely as I had thought?).
Okay...now to see how sharing files works out....want to be able to copy pictures from one comp to another thru the "My Pictures" shared folder.

Here is how to copy info from one comp to another from within the same shared folder.
I first tried it by going to the 2nd comp....going to 'My Pictures'...copying picture....then going back to 1st comp and pasting into 'My Pictures' folder. Didn't work... !
Then, I realized that since I can now access the 2nd comp from 1st comp.... ....DOHHH!!!....just do it all from one computer.

Uh Oh... ...I just learned that you can ping a person's computer name... !
Steve Jones....I thought that you were kidding about pinging a computer name....I thought that pinging had to be an IP adress. Ooops...the laugh is on me.!
