Ad-Aware Will Be Unavailable Until it's Error Free

I mentioned in an earlier post my concerns with the recent release(s) of Ad-Aware.

A decision has been made to shutdown the downloads.

This is the statement that's posted at the LavaSoftUSA site.

"Please note that Ad-aware is temporarily unavailable at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience but feel this is necessary. It has been noted that a few computer systems have had errors that we feel are unacceptable. If you have not experienced any problems you probably won't. This is simply a precautionary measure. Just one computer error caused by removing spyware is unacceptable to Lavasoft. Please check back as an update will be available soon."

I think this is the correct decision.

Cheers Renovator for the info...I think we should stop recommending Ad-Aware to new members as well - until the problems have been ironed out (in case any of the members have the same the problem as Rwinegar did).

I was able to duplicate some of your problems Sunday morning. See lyria's thread on new.net.

I am confident that LavasoftUSA, will do everything it can to thoroughly test the next version before it's released.

v5.0 made it into distribution too quickly, and LavasoftUSA has been doing everything it can to correct the chain of events that followed.

If anyone wants to volunteer some time, contact me.

LukeSolo, I do. We here at VrDoctor for the most part, try to get the best performance and enjoyment from our machines. We deal with companies all the time that produce and distribute buggy, poorly designed and EXPENSIVE software and would never admit to a problem let alone correct it. They'd rather us be the guinea pigs to save money.

These folks at LavaSoftUSA have provided us a FREE service for years that worked flawlessly and now have taken responsibility for a glitch. I for one commend them and would advise anyone that when they get back on line to continue to support them.

griffinspc - I can only guess that LukeSolo has not read through the rwinegar saga; my sympathies btw, rwinegar.

Renovator - Thanks for bringing this to our attention so promptly. I dl'd AA5.2 yesterday, but had not yet installed or run it. I expect there will be yet another update, so into the recycle bin it goes.

Thanks one and all for your efforts to help educate the rest of us on this one.

In answer to your question: I care.

It's refreshing to find a company like Lavasoft that has furnished an outstanding product with no pressure to collect money on it. I think it's now time to repay the favor and give them ample opportunity to correct their problem. Who amoungst us has not felt the anguish and frustration of turning things around when a project gets off track? A little empathy is in order.

AdAware isn't just a privacy protector anymore. It has become an almost necessary utility for smooth operation now. We have all seen where spyware degrades performance and can actually lead to more severe problems. No matter what it's original intention, I consider it part of many troubleshooting procedures, now. Glad those folks are spending the time and effort to get it right. And doing it for free.

I agree with their decision. I remember when they had a problem with the Webhancer spyway. If you tried to remove Webhancer with Adaware, it deleted some necessary DLL files that caused your web browsers not to work anymore.

It's nice to see that Adaware doesn't want it's software to destroy your computer while cleaning out the bad software.

I would not be a bit surprised if the authors of the program, just choose to let it rest in peace.

It requires quite a bit of programming to make these changes, and not to mention the amount of research necessary, to keep them up to date. For a regular commercial program, they can afford the overhead. For Freeware, let's face it, how many hours a week are you willing to work for nothing.

To those who have never attempted programming themselves, it is a very time consuming and exacting chore. If you are not pretty good at math, then don't even attempt this at home.

A program like AdAware, may require hundreds of hours of programming code being written and assembled or compiled. I myself might be willing to work up to 40 hours a week, to create a freeware program I can take some pride in. If, however, you are getting a bunch of brickbats, from a few individuals, because one out of a hundred computers have a problem, then let me ask you this.

Would you still be willing to put up with all the BS, and Lambasting, and spend 40 yours of your time each week, so you and your work can be decimated by an ungrateful few?

I think not. I would hazzard a guess, that those who bitch the loudest, are those who would not do anything for anyone without being paid.
