[RESOLVED] External SATA drive not detected.
I had to reboot Windows xp because it was frozen. Now my external drive is not detected any more. Its icon appears for one second then leaves the stage. It's a LaCie 500 Mo connected with a SATA cable. Is there anything to do except for returning it to the manufacturer? If I do that, they will format it and I have some valuable data on it.
Thanks for your help.

Is the drive still under warranty? If not, then your best option would probably be to remove it from the case and connect the drive itself as an internal SATA drive to see if you can access the data.

OK. Now at least I know what not to buy next time. Thank you for your suggestion.

Have a look in Device Manager (Windows key + Pause>Hardware tab), and tell us what the status of the drive is reported as in there please.
Nick.

Looks like I've managed to fix the problem. I've used HDAT2.exe (on Hiren's boot CD) and it has repaired the only sector that was bad. Don't know if it could have worked with a lot of bad sectors, but this may bring some hope to those who have the same kind of problem. No need to say that all my data are backed up on another drive now!
