Need to Convert AVI to Divx

Hi All,

I have some movies/video in AVI format that I want to put on a DVD and play. I can convert using Nero to VOB which will play but when I do this the movies take up the whole DVD even if they were under 1GB.

I would like to put multiple movies onto the DVD which using VOB does not allow me to do.

Is there a program (free is best) that can convert AVI to Divx so that I can burn multiple files to the DVD or is there another way I can convert to VOB which will not increase the files size by over 4x.

A 400 MB .avl usually converts ot about a 3.8 GB of VOBs.
Anyway, my experience with them.

Train is almost right
Regular movie (90 mins) is ~700MB in .avi format, which after burning will take ~3.5GB in DVD format (VOB)......
1.2GB, or 30 mins free, left.

You can use a program like DVDshrink (free) to compress the video files. Of course the more you compress it the poorer the picture quality. But for home movies and casual viewing a compression ratio of 2 or 3:1 is pretty acceptable.
