2wire and wireless adapter

Trying to setup a Gateway laptop with a WirelessG notebook adapter v.2.0. Having the AT&T 2wire disc does not seem to be getting anywhere. Before the installer left he said to use the WEB key that he left. Said when the system asks for the web just to enter it and connect....... Im not getting anywhere that way........ The disc asks if I with to install a USB driver or a cardbus driver........ states nothing about a wireless adapter.....

I got the settings entered where it suppose to be but the wireless icon at tool bar goes on and off........ it seems to connect then disconnect.... it shows the wireless g adapter.. I know the web key is correct.......

the web key is somthing else.

first, insert the usb wireless adapter on the side or back of your laptop.
insert the cd that came with it. install the usb adapter.
you'll also notice (found new hardware notice) when you insert the cd click install now
and keep following instructions.

once instalation is finished, remove the cd, go to (control panel, network connections, wireless network, view wireless networks) find your wireless network name and if it asks for the webkey enter it. the webkey is a security key that only who knows it is allowed to access you. some routers come without security so you can connect direct.

this whole thing is a bit hard for some1 who's never done these things before, I recommend you get an engineer.

Some questions:

Is this the first wireless device you are trying to get connected with your 2wire router? Posting the model number of the router would help.

Is that a WEB key (with a "B" as in "Bob") or a WEP key (with a "P" as in Paul)? If it is the latter, then you should know that WEP encryption has been cracked. If your router and laptop wireless adapter supports it, you should be using WPA or WPA2 encryption.

The usual method to get wireless networking running is to set it up initially with no encryption, make sure it is working, then change the settings on the router to use the encryption method and key, then change the laptop settings to match.

Before I had charter cable, and using a Linksys router...... the laptop is using a linksys wireless -G notebook adapter v.2.0........ I recently had ATTUverse installed in the home and on the two desktops they hooked up the 2wire 802.11g USB adapters......... which seem to working ok..... but I cannot get the linksys adapter on the laptop recognized on the gateway........ In the Network connections it shows, but when I select "View Available Wireless Connections",, nothing is listed..........the adapter is shown in the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" when I select "Configure" it states "This device is working properly"..........

you're not using windows to detect the wireless connections availble in your area


From your laptop, select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
Right-click Wireless Network Connection, and select Properties.
Click Wireless Networks tab.
Note that the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings must be selected.

i think you're using gateway's utility
you can not use 2 at the same time either gateways's own wireless utility or windows. so exit gateway's software if you have installed it, it should be near the time or else in the programs folder.

you can use gateway's utility but it's bit difficult but it works just like the windows.

still nothing?
1. check that the usb wireless adapter is working in the device manager
2. go to control pannel. system, device manager, then network adapters, if the name of the usb adapter appears there with no question marks it means you have installed it properly.
3. now unistall everything, plug the usb adapter, insert the cd but don't install from it, the (new hardware found) will apear and it will ask you to install and click next, don't select automatic but tell it that the driver is in the cd rom and let it install, then you can use it.

I tried using the "Use Windows to detect wireless connections" from the start. The monitor icon at taskbar is showing it is trying to connect. The laptop is not using the USB adapter. It is using a wireless notebook adapter. So there is no usb adapter listed in the device manager.. are you suggestioning that I try to use the usb adapter that is in one of the desktop computers and try step 3?

Did you instll the wireless usb drivers?

Installed drivers but is not showing within device manager. It does state it is installed within Control panel, Add/Remove programs
