Event Log Causes Freeze At Startup
I'm having problems with my computer freezing during start-up. it starts OK in safe mode and I've managed to isolate the problem to Event Log, when that is disabled everything works OK. I'm pretty new to all this but I realise disabling Event Log is not an ideal situation.
Any help, or prods in the right direction, would be gratefully appreciated.

Welcome to VirtualDr
You can save the current log if you want to and then clear em out to see if that helps.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

I've tried doing that, and was able to clear them, but I still have the problem with the computer hanging at start-up, unless I disable the Event Log.
I've tried to use process monitor 'Procmon', but I'm not sure how it works as the link to help is broken! I have tried to get a boot log, but I've no idea what to make of any results!

Get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (you don't get any report from the System File Checker, it just silently replaces and corrupt or missing system files that it finds).

Unfortunately I don't have an installation CD as my computer came with XP.
Is there another work around? Could I use someone else's CD, for instance?

Yes, so long as it's the same version of XP (home, pro, corp, student)

Thanks, I'll try that.
In the mean time should I just turn Event Log on after my computer starts and disable it before I log off, or should I just leave it off?
What effect is this likely to have on my system?
Thanks for your help so far.

Just leave it off for the time being, it isn't important to the actual running of Windows, so it will do no harm to leave it off.

OK, thanks.
Once I can get hold of an installation CD, I will let you know how I get on.

Good News!
I appear to have fixed my problem. I didn't manage to get hold of an installation CD. However today after doing windows update, I decided to try leaving the event log on.
I restarted my computer, held my breath, and no freeze! everything seems OK again.
I just need to check a couple of things, and try re-starting again.
I just wanted to thank you all for your help, and I'll know where to come first if I have a problem again!
