ttodd: Try following this guide to make sure the old version is gone. http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml
Then try installing the new one again by going to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Pick JRE 6 Update 6 and when prompted, choose the "Offline" version. It's a big download but all the files are there in one package.

Hmmm... Well, you mentioned that the PC had a multitude of issues. There's nothing like a reformat to set things right! Glad it's ok now!
