[RESOLVED] do not turn off your computer
my daughters laptop was supposed to be installing windows updates today, needed a reboot .... now for the last 90 minutes it has shown..... 'Configuring update stage 3 of 3. 0% complete .....please do not turn off your computer. Hard drive activity is one flash every 10 minutes or so........what am I supposed to do? What damage will be caused if I power off and attempt a reboot?
btw ... we have two identical laptops, the other one did the same update earlier in the day and only took a few minutes at this stage of the update.
Vista home premium.

I think all you can do is risk a reboot. The chances are that everything will be fine, though you may need to reinstall the update again. I've had stuff like that happen in the past and restarting didn't do any harm.

Think you're in between a rock and a hard place there VP. 90 minutes is way too long; I think you've got no choice but to shut it down. If damage is done to any of the system files, you should be able to restore/repair from OS CD/DVD.
My tuppence worth.

Thank you as always for your help and advise, after 3 attempts the computer finally configured it's updates and appears to have finished booting normally.
