Resolved [RESOLVED] [Pro] DX9 user switching problem

Having just installed DirectX DX9.0c, I find I can no longer switch between users. When I log off one user and enter the logon details for another user, the bootup hangs at the wallpaper for the new user - the icons never load, although the mouse cursor still moves. <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> does nothing so I have to do a reset and then start all over again.

    Any answers?

Sure sounds like the user profile is corrupt and that you should create another one.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Steve - thanks for the speedy reply. I have discovered that by starting the Fast User Switching Compatibility service in Admin Tools things are OK again. Not sure whether this says anything about a user profile being corrupt or not? The default setting for this service is Manual, and it doesn't seem to be called upon to start on any of my other PCs even though they are used by several users. I suppose I could set it to Automatic. I'll keep your suggestion of creating a new user profile in reserve for the time being.

That service's purpose is to kill apps that don't run nicely with multiple copies on the same machine (a situation that Fast User Switching creates). There might be something on there which isn't shutting down properly when the first user logs off. More info about the service in KB 294855.

Well, things seem to be back to normal today. No delay in icons loading on User B's desktop after User A has logged off. Can't figure out what the problem might have been - I didn't bother creating a new user profile as Steve suggested, nor did I set Fast User Switching compatibility to Auto (it's disabled) - but certainly the problem persisted over 2 or 3 reboots yesterday. But today is another day, as my sig says - perhaps the PC just needed an overnight rest That's Windows for you ....

Problems like that can often times fixed by just shutting the computer down, wait a minute then boot back up.

Sounds like something was hung up in the ram and shutting down would have possibly cleared it out.
