    [Home] Disk Not Formatted Message

    Hi,

    I was working with Wordperfect 6.0 (I like it better than Word) and I got this message:
    The drive or network connection that the shortcut WPWIN6.0 lnk refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available and try again.

    This program is on my "D" drive. So I went to "my computer" and clicked on the "D" drive and got this message:
    Disk is not formatted. Do you want to format now?

    If I click on other programs on drive "D" I get the same messages?

    Does XP do an automatic backup? Or am I in big trouble?

    Nope XP doesn't auto backup things...Have a feeling you'll start backing things up yourself

    Click on Start->Run and type: diskmgmt.msc
    What does say about your D drive? Does it see the drive and was is the format type-> NTFS, FAT or RAW?

    Go to the Command Prompt (All Programs>Accessories), then type "chkdsk D: /r" without the quotes, type "Y" when asked if you would like to schedule the check for the next time that the computer is restarted, and then reboot the PC. That should repair any filesystem errors.

    Okay you lost me at "Command Prompt". Is that the main page where I click "Start>All Programs>Accessories" or am I at the wrong place?

    Yes, that's one way, click Start | All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt.

    Another way is to click Start | Run, type cmd and press [Enter].

    When I get to that screen besides the microsoft statement it has there:

    C:\Documents and settings\Dean>

    When I type "D: /r or D:/r" I get:

    The drive cannot find the sector requested

    The complete command you need to type is:
    chkdsk d: /r
    (and press [Enter]).

    Sorry about not reading your responce more carfully.

    So it says: The type of file system is FAT32

    Then I get a popup screen: Check Disk Utility
    Check disk utility encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Then it says I can send a report to microsoft which I did.

    pipercub--What happens if you try a different route to Error Checking:
    Click My Computer|right click D:\ drive icon|Properties|Tools tab|Error Checking|Check Now ?
    You should get the message mentioned earlier about having to reboot.
    Reboot. Now what happens at reboot? (You should get a blue screen with Error Checking progress. It takes several minutes and may even seem hung part way through. Just wait.)

    When I get to error checking, I don't get the message to reboot. Just to make sure I checked with "C" drive and I did get the message to reboot and that worked okay.

    I'm sorry to say, but it sounds to me as if the partition table is completely corrupt I think you are going to have to at least reformat D: - you did have your data backed up didn't you?
