    Bios Password

    HP Pavillion dv2000
    Windows XP HE
    Phoenix Bios 4 release 6

Friends son set a bios password on this laptop and cannot remember what it is! (Now grounded till fixed!)

Have tried the 'backdoor' passwords for Phoenix Bios without success. Also entering password, blank etc.

Have also tried removing Main battery, CMOS battery and leaving for 24 hours, 48 hours, hours and hours etc restarting just on mains power with and without CMOS battery in place.

Have tried removing and reinserting Ram, HDD etc all withut success

Everytime PC boots up display momentery post screen then blue box saying Enter Password.

Have had a poke around for some sort of bios jumper but cannot find one.

Other than hitting with large hammer any suggestions.

HP service centre want over 250GBP to fix.

As always any and all assistance gratefully received.

    TP

Was hoping someone might know of a way to 'short' the bios and get it to default back to factory settings.

Laptops are particularily prone to being stolen, and the sensitive information on them leaked out. So laptop manufacturers decided to make it close to impossible to get around system power-on and even hardware data encryption on hard drive, if the owner decides to enable such passwords. So, no easy fixes for lost password situations, otherwise thieves would also use them to make protection mechanisms useless. Sorry.

Yep, even if there was an easy solution we wouldn't be able to help with it on an open forum I'm afraid, as it would give the bad guys the info they need to get a stolen laptop up and running

Appreciate where you're coming from folks.

If anyone has any suggestions they'd rather not post please email or pm them to me.

Owner (single mum/widow) of the laptop is desperate - can't afford the price HP want to charge or the cost of a new laptop.

Either that or I'll have to organise a whip round - donations via paypal!

    Thanks again
