    Scanner Problems

We have an HP scanjet 4400c series that we have used for a couple years with no problems. The past couple of days it will not scan hooked up to our desktop. We uninstalled the program and re-installed, still nothing. We hooked the scanner up to our laptop and it works fine, so it is not the scanner. It has to be something to do with our desktop. We have not added any new programs or hardware. We did have a problem with some adaware etc but we got those cleared up. We even did a system restore to a time when it did work and still nothing. Any ideas? I may not have given enough info. We have WIN XP, DSL and IE.

pennydog--Is the scanner connected by USB cable to a USB port on the PC? Perhaps the USB port is no longer working. Try another one.
Or open Device Manager when the scanner is connected and see if there are any yellow caution signs either under scanner (imaging devices) or USB controllers.
I assume you reinstalled the scanner by installing the software on the CD first--before the scanner was connected to the PC.

The scanner USB is connected to a Belkin 7-port hub, we moved the USB connection to a different terminal on the hub. In Device Manager, there are no caution signs and it says the scanner is working properly. The software has been removed and reinstalled following the scanner instructions before the USB or power cables are reconnected. Thank you for the help!!

The power cable needs to be connected but the USB doesn't. Try reinstalling the software with the power connected and the scanner turned on. You might want to check with HP and see if they have an updated driver.

Try plugging it directly into an onboard USB port, (instead of through a hub).

What program are you using to scan into? Have you tried a differnent app such as MSPaint?

pennydog--Assuming none of the above has helped, what actually happens when you try to scan connected to the PC? Nothing? Or do things start but not finish? Any error messages?

Thanks for all the replys. We are still working with it. The button of the scanner will no longer let it scan, but you can go to the file menu and scan from there. The doc will scan in but it will not allow you to save or send it as we used to. We have tried the program that came with the scanner (?) and Picassa 2. I cannot remember right off which program he uses the most, but it does not allow him to save the doc. I am thinking it uses the HP driver since we have re-installed the program, but will check that also.

Will post back as soon as we can try some other stuff or get other info.

We downloaded the driver link provided by LordNineLives(thank you very much !!) and the scanner is working now. The 4 control buttons(scan, e-mail, print, etc) on the front of the scanner still aren't working as before, but at least now we can go into Start, Program files, HP Precisionscan, etc and use the task bar controls to scan and save the scan into a file. The end result is the same, just a little longer process to get there. Thank you very much to all of you that offered assistance, it is greatly appreciated!!!

Burn those drivers to cd for future installs if they are ever needed.
